When you are first diagnosed with coeliac disease, one of the most difficult meal occasions is often breakfast. And with so many Brits reaching for a bowl of cereal or a piece of toast in the morning, finding a gluten free breakfast that works for you can be a challenge. But don’t despair! We are here to help. We have some tasty gluten free breakfast ideas, including top tips for increasing your fibre and calcium intake, getting that oh so important five a day fruit and veg, and our top five gluten free breakfast recipes that will have you second guessing whether they actually are gluten free!
The clue is in the name! – Breakfast literally breaks the overnight fasting period after a long period of rest, and provides essential energy to get you back up and running for the day. Evidence has shown that breakfast is important for boosting mental performance and providing key nutrients such as carbohydrate, protein, calcium and B-vitamins. Eating a healthy gluten free breakfast every morning will also help to control hunger during the rest of the day, reducing snacking on unhealthier foods.
Unfortunately, gluten is present in bread and will need to either be replaced with gluten free alternatives or removed from your diet. A note about cross-contamination: When preparing gluten free toast, be mindful of cross contamination if you share a kitchen with people who eat gluten-containing food. Sharing a toaster is likely to transfer crumbs, so try to use a separate toaster where possible, or toaster bags to prevent contamination. Keep separate pots of butter, jam and other spreads to prevent toast crumbs from transferring between gluten free and gluten-containing bread.
And talking of toppings to toast, eggs are naturally gluten free, and according to a poll by Currys PC World, they are the nation’s favourite breakfast. Who knew? Whether you have them boiled, scrambled or poached, they are a great gluten free breakfast to start your day.
Gluten is also present in most cereals, so again, if this is your go to breakfast, you will need to seek out gluten free alternatives. Aim to choose one that is fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, including calcium and iron.
If you are a lover of porridge or overnight oats for breakfast just make sure that the label states that the oats you are buying are gluten free. Oats are often contaminated with wheat, rye or barley during production or processing, which is why it’s so important to check the packaging. If you struggle to find uncontaminated oats, quinoa will work as a substitute.
There are lots of fantastic naturally gluten free options for breakfast, such as fruit and yogurt. For a quick, healthy breakfast, invest in some bags of frozen fruit which can work out cheaper than fresh fruit and are very convenient. Why not try quinoa overnight oats? Soak quinoa in milk or water overnight, add a handful of frozen berries (we love blackberries and blueberries), and a few tablespoons of yogurt. If you want to take it to the next level add half an apple, a teaspoon of cinnamon and a handful of chopped walnuts – trust us, it’s delicious…like apple crumble for breakfast!
Croissants, pain au chocolat and cinnamon whirls are made with flour so they are not gluten free. Don’t despair though, if a pastry is your go to breakfast, we have perfected some gluten free versions of your favourites!
If you’re looking for more of a treat at the weekend, you’ll be pleased to hear traditional favourites, such as a full English breakfast, can easily be adapted to make them gluten free. Just make sure you purchase gluten free Sausages (some sausages contain breadcrumbs). And don’t forget to ensure the bread you use for your bacon butty or sausage sandwich is gluten free too. Black pudding usually contains barley and oats, hence isn’t suitable for a gluten free diet.
