Our Top 5 Gluten Free Money Saving Tips

With costs of lots of every day items increasing, we wanted to share our top five gluten free money saving tips.

1. Always write a shopping list

Supermarkets are clever when it comes to manipulating us to spend more instore, from the treats at the till to the aroma of freshly baked bread when you enter the store (not great when you’re gluten free!)  To resist the temptation to pick up items you don’t need, we recommend spending ten minutes at the start of each week planning your meals.

If you can, pick the same night, grab a cup of tea, and think about the meals you and your family might have. If you’re the only person in your family who is gluten free, or you live alone, you might want to think about which gluten free items you’re running low on, and whether you need to place an order for your gluten free prescription or pick up some extras at the supermarket. Once you’ve decided on the meals, this should help you with a shopping list.  For instance, sticking to set items, rather than buying extras you don’t need can really help save money.

Top tip: shopping online can be a great way to ensure you aren’t distracted, and many retailers allow you to save favourites on their apps, making for an easier, more convenient shopping experience.

2. Swap fresh for canned or frozen

There is a widespread perception that fresh fruit and vegetables are better for us.  However, the time spent on transport and on the shelf can be longer than those that have been frozen when picked.

Even though costs are going up, it’s still so important to strive for our five a day in fruit and veg.  That being said, keeping our diets varied and interesting can be a struggle. Remember fresh, frozen and canned all count towards your target.

Top tip: why not challenge yourself to try something different each week? It’s a great way to find new favourites.

3. Try meat free

Meat can be a costly element to a meal, particularly if you’re cooking for a family. Therefore, decreasing your meat content, bulking out dinners with extra pulses such as lentils and beans or choosing a couple of meals a week that are meat free can make a big difference to your food shopping bill.

Here’s some of our favourite meat free meals:

4. Freeze to please!

Your freezer is your friend. Trust us. Batch cooking saves time and money.  So make sure you store those delicious leftovers, using a label to identify what the meal is along with a date of when you cooked it (no-one wants the disappointment of defrosting what they think is a chilli and discovering it’s leftover gravy from a Sunday roast…trust us, we’ve been there!)

Are you the only one eating gluten free in your household? Why not freeze your bread in portion controlled batches, so every time you need a piece of toast or a sandwich you’re covered. Also, leftover bread or crusts can be blended down and used as breadcrumbs which also freeze beautifully.

You’d be surprised how many things you can freeze, vegetables, herbs, meat.  Just make sure you label and you’ll cut down your food waste in no time!

5. Utilise your gluten free prescription

If you have a regular gluten free prescription, make sure you’re optimising it to suit your needs. Trying different brands, and different foods can help to keep your diet varied and cut down on food waste for instance. Consider switching to higher fibre varieties such as our High Fibre Loaf or Fresh Brown Loaf, which can also help to contribute to your daily fibre intake of 30g per day.

If you have different items on your prescription (e.g. bread and flour) make sure you have a pre payment certificate set up. This cost effective way of managing your prescription covers the cost of all of the gluten free items on your prescription for just £2 a week (rather than paying individually for each category of foods you have on prescription).
