Gluten Free Prescription On A Budget

With rising food costs making a substantial dent in weekly budgets. It’s a good idea to ensure you’re getting the most out of the gluten free food that you’re entitled to receive on gluten free prescription*. Read on for our top tips for gluten free on a budget.

Pre-payment certificates

If you pay for your NHS prescriptions, purchasing a pre-payment certificate (PPC) could help save you money. A PPC covers the cost of all your NHS prescriptions for a set price. This includes gluten free foods, but also covers any other medication you may need during the period that your certificate covers. You will save money if you need more than 3 items in 3 months, or 11 items in 12 months.

The prescription charge for a single item in England is £9.65, whereas a PPC costs £31.25 for 3 months, or £111.60 for 12 months. For more information, visit: NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) | NHSBSA

Before purchasing a PPC, check that you’re not eligible to receive free prescriptions by using the NHS eligibility checker:  Check if you’re eligible for help | NHSBSA

Check those dates!

When you collect your prescription, be sure to check the use-by dates on all of your gluten free products.  Use those with the earliest dates first, putting these at the front of your cupboard. Remember, Glutafin bread products can be frozen to use at a later date. If you’re the only person eating gluten free within your household, why not try freezing individual slices of your loaves in sealed freezer bags to save defrosting a whole loaf.

Use your loaf!

If you prefer not to eat your loaf crusts as part of a sandwich, a great money saving tip is to try blending them to make gluten free bread crumbs.  These can be used for pie toppings or to coat chicken, fish or cheese. Your bread crumbs can be frozen for use at a later date too! Alternatively, try chopping your crusts in to 1cm cubes and roasting for a few mins with a spritz of spray oil.  You can use your delicious croutons on top of salads or soups.

Fancy a change?

If your current prescription isn’t working for you, change it! Perhaps you’d like more boxes of flour mix, but fewer loaves? Or maybe you have less time for home baking using your flour mixes, but need more bread rolls to fill lunchboxes? Call or email your GP surgery or pharmacist to discuss ordering a different selection of products that will work for you. This kind of change can often be done easily over the phone, without the need to book an appointment.

Left over lunches

A selection of gluten free pastas are available on prescription in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Gluten-free pasta dishes are an excellent main meal choice, but why not try adding some chopped veg, tuna or cheese to leftovers, and make a delicious cold pasta salad for tomorrow’s lunch?

In fact, making a larger portion of any main meal and having it for lunch the next day is a great way to save money if you are gluten free on a budget. And it can save you time too!

Gluten free baguettes are a great choice for lunch on the go, but did you know that leftovers can be used to make crusty garlic bread slices?  You can also toast them to make crostini for dipping or topping with your favourite cheese.

Get creative with Glutafin

Flour mixes are the most versatile gluten free product available on prescription. They’re also super easy to use, meaning you can create a variety of dishes from just one box! Try making pastry, cakes, breads and buns. Avoid waste by freezing any of your leftover creations. For inspiration, visit the recipe section of our website: Gluten Free Recipes | Glutafin
