Sandwiches For Summer Picnics Using Gluten Free White Bread

When the sun comes out, there’s nothing like packing a picnic and heading off to the park or the countryside for a little al fresco eating. Glutafin’s range of gluten free white bread is perfect for you to enjoy on your summer picnic. But as ever, a little care and attention is needed if you want to enjoy gluten free sandwiches as part of your packed lunch. Gluten free white bread is a great first step. But remember, you also need to select your sandwich fillings and condiments to be gluten free too. But don’t worry; there’s plenty of great flavours you can enjoy.

Butters and spreads

Plain butter is gluten free, but if the whole family is sharing the butter, then there is still a risk of cross contamination. Breadcrumbs could find their way into the butter unnoticed. It’s usually best to keep your own butter, separate from the rest of the family, and don’t share the same knife when you’re making your sandwiches.

Gluten free white bread sandwich fillings

Plain cooked meats and fish are normally gluten free. But, you should check flavoured or glazed meats and breaded hams to ensure they are gluten free. Always check the ingredients carefully or buy specifically gluten free products for extra peace of mind.

Similarly, simple cheeses are generally gluten free, however flavoured and processed cheeses sometimes have additional ingredients that contain gluten. Once again, check the label, and if in doubt always opt for the designated gluten free version.

Gluten free condiments

You should avoid any condiments that contain malt vinegar. Malt vinegar is produced from barley, therefore it will contain gluten. Fortunately, most mayo and salad crème is made with spirit vinegar. Spirit vinegar, apple cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar are all naturally gluten free. If the labelling is not clear about the type of vinegar used, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and choose an alternative you are confident about.

Once again, you should avoid cross contamination by having your own jars of condiments. If the whole family are dipping their knives into the mayo jar, you risk cross contamination. Alternatively, you can choose squeezable bottles, which avoid any contact with the contents.

Gluten free favourites

There are endless options for making sandwiches with your gluten free white bread, whether you’re going for a picnic or making a bacon butty for breakfast. Here are a few of our favourites for you to try:

  1. Bacon and avocado – a ripe, spreadable avocado adds a delicious creamy texture to your breakfast or brunch, without worrying about the ingredients of your brown sauce.
  2. Red pesto chicken – this magical Mediterranean combination is another original combination that avoids adding a sauce. Pesto will add a tangy taste to a plain chicken sandwich and there is a wide selection of pesto strengths and flavours. You can make your own pesto with gluten free ingredients or choose gluten free pesto from the supermarket.
  3. Tuna sweetcorn – mix your tuna with a little gluten free mayo and some crispy sweetcorn for a crunchy, satisfying sandwich. For added zest, sprinkle on a little cayenne pepper to the mix.
  4. Roast beef and horseradish sauce – finishing off your Sunday roast in style with this classic English sandwich is always a winner. Horseradish sauce is usually made with spirit vinegar, so it is gluten free, but it’s still worth checking for any additives that may contain gluten.

Following a gluten free diet can be testing at times, but with Glutafin gluten free white bread and a little creativity and imagination, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the perfect picnic in the summer sunshine.
