Is The Keto Diet Similar To A Gluten Free Diet?

Whilst a keto diet may be lower in gluten than a typical diet, it is not gluten free as it doesn’t involve excluding all sources of gluten from the diet.

How similar is the keto diet to a gluten free one?

The keto diet involves a substantial reduction in starchy, carbohydrate foods, such as bread, pasta, cereals and crackers, which are also the main sources of gluten in the diet. However, a keto diet would also look to reduce naturally gluten free starchy foods such as potatoes and rice. Whilst a keto diet may be lower in gluten than a typical diet based on healthy-eating principles, it is not the same as a gluten free diet.

Is the keto diet a healthy option for people with coeliac disease?

For those with coeliac disease, the only treatment for the lifelong autoimmune condition is a strict gluten free diet avoiding all sources of gluten in the diet as well as cross contamination. Eliminating gluten from the diet will alleviate symptoms associated with the condition as well as help to reduce the risk of developing associated long-term health complications.

A gluten free diet is more restrictive than a typical gluten-containing diet and can mean it is harder to achieve an adequate intake of some nutrients typically provided by the foods excluded. As the keto diet is also restrictive it would not be a healthy option for people with coeliac disease to consider.
