Training in Oz, 18th April 2008
Well we’ve arrived in Perth (after a few days in Singapore to break up the journey) and I was keen to get training straight away. Unfortunately, the bus company responsible for getting us to the pool hadn’t told the hotel the arrangements, but I managed to find out from two very friendly German swimmers and got to the pool the next day. Met up with Jim, my coach, and trained for an hour and a half. Felt really good and strong. I think I’m one of the few swimmers out here who has a coach to themselves, which really helps to build confidence and kudos. Thanks Jim..
We went to the GB Amateur Swimming Association’s reception for all the GB swimmers (about 40 to 50 of us), but unfortunately all the food had gluten in it – the soft drinks were good though! After that it was the opening ceremony, which was amazing. The show included swimmers, divers, water polo players and synchronized swimmers from over 74 countries, as well as Aborigine dancers. Everyone is very friendly, especially the New Zealanders and Aussies.
The swimming pools are fantastic – three 50 metre pools: one eight-lane indoor, one eight-lane outdoor and one 10-lane outdoor. I've trained in both the eight-lane pools and tomorrow (Sat 19th) I'm up really early (5am) to get warmed up for my 100m freestyle race in the 10-lane pool. I've not swum in it yet and need to ensure that my turns (well, just one turn actually!) is perfect. Not seen much of Perth yet – the tourist bit starts on Tuesday after my events finish.
Managing my gluten-free diet seems to be going fine so far. We’ve stocked up on fruit, cheese and most importantly, Rice Crispies and milk for breakfast. Haven't found any gluten-free products yet, but haven't had that much time to shop. However, whilst I was training today, Deb tracked down a health food shop and ordered a fresh gluten-free loaf, but the soonest they can get it by is Monday 21st. Thanks Glutafin, all the food you sent me out with is really keeping me going! Eating out, we’ve found a really good Thai restaurant, which apart from noodles, is gluten-free. Luckily we both like spicy food! Tonight we’ll look for a steakhouse. Having an early night ready for my first event tomorrow.
Find out how Mark got on in his events in his next blog on 25th April.
